Antiques, Art and Color in Tampa

Posted by

For Charlsie Shine, the owner, it was love at first sight when she saw the house.  “I fell in love with the open floor plan and quality of the detail work, coupled with the beautiful back outdoors area,” says Shine, who now shares the home with her partner.  She channeled her passion for antiques, art and color to give the 1980s town home a much-needed makeover, "Painting and tweaking added my personality to the space,” says Shine. “My philosophy is ‘Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.’ So being minimalist is not an option for me.”

Vibrant red walls and a mix of eclectic and one-of-a-kind finds make up the living room. “I constantly draw inspiration not only from being in the world of antiques and design, but also from fabrics, color and even nature,” says Shine. An antique Asian screen breaks up the red hue on one wall, while the colorful decor accents give life to the room.

“I buy things that I love and somehow make them work together. I rarely measure for size or consider the practical,” Shine says. “My friends say that I do not buy anything that is not big or extremely heavy.” She picks up many items along her travels, like the Foo dog here, which once decorated the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.

“My house is an eclectic mix and has Asian as well as African and Indian elements,” says Shine. “I think different genres are better when they’re mixed.”
