Here are some tips that can help you make the room feel pulled together and perfectly harmonious. There are always exceptions but in order to break the rules we must know them first.
FURNITURE PLACEMENT
Make sure you have at least 24 inches of space all the way around your dining room table so guests can move freely on their way to use the powder room without bumping those seated.

RUGS
Not every dining room needs a rug, but if you do have one make sure there is enough coverage to pull chairs in and out without any landing half on and half off the rug. The average dining table will need a rug that’s up to 32 inches wider. This gives one room to pull out chairs without falling off the rug. But remember rugs are rugs and not wall-to-wall carpeting, so make sure there is still breathing room between rug edges and walls to keep the space from feeling tight.

LIGHTING
Choose a chandelier about half the width of your dining table. Lighting at proper scale above your table will help the entire space feel pulled together. Hang the fixture so the bottom is 30 to 36 inch above the table, out of anyone's line of vision but lighting the scene and creating the sense of atmosphere.
