The Satsuma porcelain most know today is the distinctive Japanese style of the Meiji period (1868 to 1912). During this period, production focused on utilitarian concerns like storage or cooking, but among the elite classes more ornate ritualistic pieces of extraordinarily high value took hold. These porcelains have a warm cream, ivory to beige background with a crackled glaze, and over-glaze designs in orange, green, blue, red or gold decoration. Satsuma is known for its distinctively ornate painted imagery. Use oversized Satsuma vases to give drama to your room. The aesthetic is timeless.
